These are just some of the many experiences I used to deal with. How do any of us navigate these emotional waters? Do any of us acknowledge our success by the extent of our emotional wellbeing? How do we move forward on this journey and what are the things that have steered me through this terrain?
The following techniques and inner resources have helped me to overcome these negative feelings and enabled my subconscious mind to erase the ‘emotional residue’ they left behind, and helped me to create the new reality I find myself in total appreciation for every day.
Asking Empowering Questions
The questions we ask ourselves determine the answers that are presented to us. So, you can ask ‘why is this happening to me?’ ‘Who is to blame?’ These take the responsibility out of your hands and onto something external that you feel you can’t control. One way to reframe this is to ask ‘How do I want to feel?’ ‘What can I learn from this that will move me forward?’ This takes the focus away from the problem and onto what you want to experience and feel.
The Balance Procedure
The Balance Procedure (TBP) continues to be an indispensable tool in my life. We have between 60,000 to 120,000 thoughts a day. How many of these are beliefs that prevent us from reaching our true potential? These thoughts create an emotion (energy in motion) and influence the way you feel, which in turn determines what actions you take as a result of those feelings.
TBP rewires the energy circuitry that hinders people from reaching their true potential. We are not just flesh and bone but also have an energy system which can get out of balance as a result of any limiting thought patterns that we may have.
So what exactly is TBP? It is a relaxation/energy technique which works on the body’s energy system. It switches the stress response to the relaxation response, transforms limiting thought patterns and enables us to feel better emotionally on a more consistent basis, so that we can start consciously creating more of the experiences we want and feeling the emotions we want to feel. It is as though we are resetting our energetic thermostat to a new level which warms things up to bring us closer to what we want to attract into our lives. It continues to be a tool I use daily as it is quick, simple and powerful.
Journal Writing
After being inspired by reading The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod, I started writing in my journal each day over a period of several months, just to see what effect it had. The way I have been connecting with this is to prepare myself emotionally by using TBP. Meditation is another lead-in activity to my journal writing. However, you can simply go straight into writing without using these tools.
I tend to start by writing a question at the top of the page, but you can start in any way that resonates with you. The question I sometimes use is ‘What would the Divine/Universe/Higher Self (or whatever word feels best for you) have me know today?’ Then I simply start writing as a stream of consciousness to see whatever comes out on the page.
Amazing things happen when we step out of our own way and allow the words to flow. Powerful insights occur and solutions often just appear spontaneously. It is a fantastic way to take time away from our phones and computers and just be with ourselves to process our emotions, ground our experiences and set intentions.
The Power of the Present
Things that have enabled me to get in the present moment include spending time in nature, going on a mindful walk where I focus on what I can see, smell, hear, touch or even taste. This always brings my attention to the present moment. Any kind of movement such as walking, dancing and exercise always gets me out of my head and releases those ‘feel-good’ endorphins. Singing and music are big ones for me. I have been in a choir for several years and it never fails to uplift me. This list would not be true to me if I didn’t include reading and listening to inspirational books, films and YouTube videos.
Back to Basics
The final thing I found helpful in getting me out of my own way is very simple but it puts things into perspective; that is appreciation and gratitude. My morning always starts with focusing on what I appreciate in my life right now. If we aren’t happy with what we have got then what makes us think we would be happy with more?
