THE DREAM WHISPERER Davina MacKail Why is it that every night, whilst we sleep, we are completely paralysed, fully sexually stimulated, flooded with creative chemicals and forced to watch incomprehensible movies in our mind?

This is the world of our dreams. Every sleep of our life presents a unique opportunity to access this fantastical, mystical world where quite literally anything anything could happen and generally does. Galaxies of extraordinary landscapes unfold, improbable events become commonplace, bizarre creatures are manifested, time and space become whimsical playthings and every emotion known to us is invoked, from anger to terror to ecstasy to joy and all those in between.

From earliest times dreams have fascinated us, and for good reason. They offer moments of truth that reveal something of ourselves. We can lie whilst awake, but we can’t fake our dreams.

The definitive purpose of dreaming remains one of the great unsolved mysteries. The worlds of science and psychology both have their views, but no one has the absolute answer as to whether dreams are purely a physiological or a psychological necessity. They are many things, often all at once. But science has proven that they are ways of seeking solutions, maintaining our mental health, improving performance and sustaining sleep.

From my own experience I belief dreams play a more fundamental role in our lives that we have thus far given them credit for. For me, their purpose is threefold: they are a process of reorganisation of the self, a means to an understanding who we truly are and an infinite source of creativity and inspiration.
